Winter Skin Tips & Essentials
Ahhh winter. It’s time to pack up our sunnies and singlets, and pull out our sweaters and warm jackets from our closets. Much like our clothing during this season, we may have to revamp or add more cold-weather essentials in our skincare cabbie.
What may happen to the skin during winter?
Increased dryness, itchiness and irritation may occur due to the cooler outdoor conditions or the escalated indoor dry heating that sucks moisture from your skin.
To prevent these from happening, here are some ST SKIN SAVIOUR TIPS for winter skin:
Maximise moisture and avoid dryness
When indoors, make sure not to leave the heater on for too long or just keep it set to a comfortable 20-22°C thermostat setting. Investing in a humidifier especially in rooms you spend most of your time in (i.e. bedroom or home office) will add moisture into the dry air inside your home. Limit shower time to a maximum of 10 minutes and avoid the use of hot water (stick to lukewarm).
Keep hydrated and stay on top of your nutrition
The skin requires adequate hydration to perform at its best. A lack of hydration can make your skin look dry, flaky, feel tight, and make it more difficult to flush out toxins. Keeping your skin hydrated helps to combat the buildup of dry dead skin cells and help address surface dullness, making it appear more plump.
Making sure you have an adequate amount of essential fatty acids like omega-3s and omega-6s in your diet are also essential. These polyunsaturated fats are the building blocks of healthy cell membranes that help produce the skin's natural oil barrier and help modulate the immune response in the skin.
A powerful blend of the EFAs 3, 6, 7 and 9, this supplement has more than 190 nutrients and bioactive substances all entirely sourced from plant-based ingredients. They work to soothe and nourish the body, increase water levels in the skin and improve its structural integrity and barrier function.

Adjust your skincare
Gentle cleansers are the go-to, especially during these colder winter months. As a general rule of thumb, your skin should feel supple and hydrated after washing. If your skin feels tighter after cleansing it means it is likely that the cleanser you are using has disrupted your skin barrier.
Adding more hydrating and repair serums + swapping your light moisturiser for a more emollient seal will help lock that moisture in and prevent your skin from manifesting a tight, cracked and inflamed appearance.
Opt for a leave-on hydrating mask and pamper yourself during your weekend nights. Adding this to your routine incorporates a little more hydration and self-care into your cold winter nights.
Don’t neglect your eyes, lips and hands
Especially with the COVID-19 precautionary sanitary measures, remember to apply a rich layer of moisturiser on your hands after washing to prevent them from scaling and drying up.
When we lick our lips, we will only exacerbate dryness. Lather up on some ointment or some lip balm to prevent lips from chapping.
Using an eye cream with moisturizing ingredients may help to prevent that dryness in the eye area. Since dry skin can cause fine lines to appear more prominently, the ingredients in the eye cream will help reduce the appearance of wrinkles on your skin.
Boost your immunity
The immune system is your body’s built-in defence system to protect you against harmful bacteria and viruses. Living a healthy, balanced lifestyle is the best thing you can do to make sure your immune system can function optimally. However, we also believe taking extra precautionary measures to boost our immune system is essential especially during cold and flu season.
